Plants and Flowers in Tagore\'s Songs
"The book provides a complete pictorial list of plants and flowers mentioned and used by Tagore in his lyrics as enlisted in unabridged edition of \'Gitabitan\' (Akhanda Gitabitan). The plants are arranged in this volume in Bengali alphabetical order with English names in parenthesis. A short description of each plant and its floral characters, its use in public welfare, literary and mythological background, if any, and its values in public life have been incorporated in the text in simple style instead of going into serious, weighty scientific names and detailed background. To meet botanical and horticultural curiosities about such families, flowering time and flower colour are given in a tabular form. But the essence of this volume lies in revealing the melody in plants and flowers in Tagore\'s song compositions and to focus the depth of his knowledge in plant science, his interests on plants and flowers and their masterly use in lyrics.
Plants mentioned in this book are mostly known and common in tropical and subtropical climates in different parts of the world. The volume thus, can be of great use to amateur gardeners, plant lovers, students and Tagore lovers.
The book also contains a special chapter on plants and flowers named by Tagore in his inimitable style and a simple discussion on plant morphology. List of books consulted and used for the preparation of this volume are acknowledged in the bibliography. Finally all the 482 songs used in this book are enlisted in alphabetical orders citing the respective parts and serials as given in Akhanda Gitabitan." (jacket)
