The book “Thermal Physics and Statistical Mechanics” is an introductory text for undergraduate students of physics. The book contains seven chapters and each chapter is provided with objective type questions, solved examples and exercises. The book covers the syllabus prescribed by UGC for the paper Thermal Physics and Statistical Mechanics as well as for the syllabus of many Indian universities.
The text has been presented in a simple manner that helps student to grasp the subject matter easily. The students will find a fair amount of detail in the examples and derivation given in the text. The book deals with the Thermodynamics processes, Thermodynamic laws, Entropy, Thermodynamic potentials, Joule- Thomson Effect, Phase Transitions, Black body radiation and different laws of radiation, Kinetic theory of gases, Transport phenomenon, Maxwell Boltzmann velocity distribution, Microstates and Macro states, various kinds of Ensembles, Entropy in statistical mechanics, Maxwell- Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics, electron gas and photon gas are also discussed.
