"Education in rural areas, despite being promoted on a grand scale by the government, still struggles for survival. Increase in drop-out rate, decrease in enrolment rate, lack of infrastructural facilities, indifferent attitude of teachers towards students and vague understanding of the benefits of education among the parents of rural children are some of the major ills plaguing educational scenario in rural areas. One of the biggest problems facing the spread of education in deprived areas is the timely release of funds from the government. Community participation in education in rural areas not only ensures physical and human facilities at schools but also motivates the teachers to achieve higher quality of education. Self-reliant technology can promote participation of the people which in particular can benefit the economy and society in many ways. Therefore, the technology aiming at production by masses, generation of employment and earlier handling of tools is relevant for rural areas." (jacket)
