"The first volume report includes the scientific results hitherto obtained from the Botanical Expeditions to Eastern Himalaya by the University of Tokyo in 1960 and 1963. The main objects of our expeditions are to make more clear the close botanical relationship between Eastern Himalaya and Japan, to investigate critically the corresponding taxa in both regions, and to analyse the process of evolution in the plant groups originated from a common ancestor in the early tertiary and now widely separated in both regions. So we have concentrated our effort to study the temperate flora of Eastern Himalaya in comparison with that of Japan. Our collections consist of about 60,000 specimens which are in many cases supplemented by field notes and coloured photographs. Moreover a large number of vascular plants were brought home as living plants and seeds, and are now cultivated in Japan for our studies.
The second volume comprises the results obtained from the Third Botanical Expedition to Eastern Himalaya (Bhutan, Nepal) in 1967 and the Fourth Expedition (Nepal, Sikkim) in 1969 organized by the University of Tokyo. It also includes supplementary remarks to an earlier volume of "The Flora of Eastern Himalaya" published by the university in 1966 and which was based on the data from the botanical expeditions by the University of Tokyo between 1960 and 1964.
The third volume is the third report of "Flora of Eastern Himalaya" and is a continuation of the first two reports compiled by Prof. Hiroshi Hara, which were published on 31 December 1966 and 31 March 1971. This volume includes results of taxonomic studies mainly based on the collections by the fifth botanical expedition to Eastern Himalaya in 1972 organized by the University of Tokyo and those by Dr. Hiroo Kanai during his stay in Nepal from 1969 to 1971 as a Colombo Plan Advisor to the Department of Medicinal Plants, H.M.G. of Nepal. It also contains data supplementary to the preceding two reports, which were published on the basis of our expeditions in 1960, 1963 (two times), 1964, 1967 and 1969. The man purposes of the present research were stated in the first volume, and critical comparative studies on corresponding taxa in Japan and Himalaya have continued, though a number of results of our investigations were published elsewhere, as cited in the systematic enumeration or bibliography in the former and present volumes."
