The idea of the workshop was perceived and instructions were given on holding the workshop from the office of the Prime Minister. Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. It was pointed out in the recommendation of the workshop that the traditional knowledge of the tribal people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in the preparation and use of herbal medicine for their own treatment should be properly documented. For the purpose, the ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts was given the responsibility to sponsor the job in collaboration with the Bangladesh National Herbarium. As a result the National Herbarium was asked to carry out the work, and was allocated a budget out of the funds earmarked for the development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The Bangladesh National Herbarium with its technical expertise and assistance from the manpower recruited through the project took on the task of acquiring data on the ailments and diseases of the tribal people, and the medicinal plants used by them in the three Hill Tracts districts of Khagrachari, Rangamati and Bandarban.
