From the Introduction: "This book has been written with the aim of stimulating interest in useful plants in Nepal. It is based on extensive field surveys to collect data on such plants and to determine their vernacular names, which in many cases vary within the same language from region to region. Separate line drawings have been made of each of the plants, and these together with the descriptions of them should facilitate their identification by the reader.

It is hoped that the book will be of interest to both specialist and nonspecialist readers who want to gain a wider knowledge of the various uses of plants within Nepal. It is also hoped that the information about the various uses of plants mentioned here may help to stimulate further research on plants, and that information on the range of plant distribution may be of use as a basis for both individual and commercial exploitation."
