It describes an ancient peasant culture subjected first to military feudalism, at its height under the great Mughals, and then to the essentially parasitic East India Company which imposed a form of capitalism that paralyzed the economy of its host. In the twentieth century, India has come into the world market and the book charts the impact of the two world wars and the great depression."
