"The book: The method of presentation adopted has been to emphasize the broad general principles of animal biology with a learning towards the physiological aspect.

In general, a textbook for elementary students serves two main purposes: it is a supplement to instruction by lesson or lecture; and a source of information for students not attending a formal course of study.

The discerning student can select portions appropriate to his needs, though it is hoped that his interest in the subject may have been sufficiently aroused to induce him to add to his essential examinational knowledge by exploring regions outside his syllabus.

No study of animal biology can be complete which ignores practical acquaintance with animals described for, as has been rightly said, "Zoology is the study of animals and not merely the study of books about animals." For true appreciation, a living animal is preferable to a dead one, and a dead one is better than any drawing or written description.

In this edition some modifications have been found necessary to keep the book up to date." (jacket)
