"This volume has grown out of the conscious thinking of a section of the teaching community of the nation\'s premier university who have tried to contribute their bit to a better appraisal of the copious problems bedevilling the state in the new millennium. The challenges Bangladesh confronts are many, but they are not unrelated. Hence the contributors to the study have focused their analyses upon some of those many-sided issues which seem both entwined and overlapping in terms of linkages and ramifications for national development.

The issues covered include societal concerns such as politics and governance; foreign policy considerations; economy; leadership and strategy; developmental paradigms; left politics; public administration; educational efforts; gender concerns; language policy; labour and industrial management. There are other issues such as urban governance; market access in an age of globalisation; role of the intellectual community; art, crafts, culture and remaking of traditions; water policy; natural gas; poverty alleviation; biodiversity; environment; biotechnology; garments industry; information and communication technology; social capital; and geopolinomics of national strategy. The issues addressed are multifaceted, and the analysts, drawn from various disciplines, excel in their respective fields. Naturally, the perspectives offered are varied and multidimensional. The views are assorted, but a commonality of ideals and a sense of dedication to the nation rein supreme over the multiplicity of views and perspectives." (jacket)
