Wide-ranging financial sector reforms have been undertaken in India since the initiation of economic reforms in early 1990s. As a result, Indian banking industry has undergone several changes during the first initial decade of the 21st century. The key objective of reforms in the banking sector in India has been to improve financial intermediation and maintain financial stability. Successful implementation of banking sectors reforms, has transformed the banking system into a vibrant financial sector with many innovative and technology driven services at their end.

Given the gradual up gradation of skills and technologies and the restructuring and re-engineering processes being attempted by the banking industry, the highly regulated and directed banking system is now transforming itself into one characterized by openness, competition and prudence.
