India being one of the 17 megadiversity nation in the world. India possesses a diversity of ecological habitats ranging from tropical sub-tropical alpine to desert. In India, the Western Ghat and the Eastern Himalayan forests have been identified as the megadiversity hot spots. In fact within the 2.4% of the world\'s total land area, India is known to have 11% and 7.5% of the flora and fauna respectively. Biodiversity creates a systematic frame work for analyzing the problem and searching for possible solutions. The year of 2010 is considered as the International Year of Biodiversity which includes a series of programme to protect the biodiversity. The convention on Biodiversity CBD will provide India an opportunity to consolidate, scale-up and demonstrate our initiatives and strengths on biodiversity.
