Calcutta Traffic Police in the Eyes of History
This book on Calcutta Traffic Police, a new study in urban history, a new addition in the study of Calcutta, delves into an unexplored subject which does not attract scholars in the usual sense. The subject has been neglected for long. Anew Calcutta emerges with the creation of Calcutta Improvement Trust in 1912, a remedy for plague- stricken Calcutta, capital of a company-administered colony and crown-ruled after 1857 and this new Calcutta with new roads and new transports, important tools of an urban scenario, needed a new management, even, people had to be controlled at par with the rules of the age. But Calcutta can not be compared with any other city in terms of space or roads. In such a scenario, the management of the city needs a special quality and the people concerned were Calcutta Traffic Police, the popular face of Police. We have inherited their legacy.
