“Natural hazards like cyclones, floods, earthquakes and landslides, cause enormous damage and loss to human lives, build environment, property and business. Damages are also being experienced by societies due to hazards like terrorists attacks sand accidental chemical explosions. Many countries in the world have been experiencing disasters due to one or more of these hazards. The size and nature of disaster can be mitigated (i) by making use of information collected from previous events and the environment (ii) by conducting scientific studies to understand the natural hazards and their effects on built environment, and (iii) by developing and adopting suitable methods of efficient management in pre and post disaster operations including issue of warnings, rescue/recovery and rehabilitation. Disaster preparedness and mitigation involves multi-disciplinary effort requiring close coordination among administrators, academics/scientists, technocrats, regulatory authorities and the departments concerned besides the cooperation from the people involved. Disasters can be effectively mitigated by developing and adopting suitable strategies by making use of expertise, knowledge and information available with or collected y the parties concerned. Large scale exchange/sharing of data/information and knowledge will be involved in this process either involving one discipline (or area of work) or that spanning across two or more disciplines. Computer, information and communication technologies can be effectively used to deal with the problem of speedy exchange information/knowledge of different types among the parties, that may be located at different geographic locations. This requires development of suitable strategies and systems to suit the needs of management and users as well.
