"Shrimad Bhagavatam or the Bhagavata Purana has occupied an uninterrupted position of centrality in the religious life of Vaishnavas for over a millennium and is considered their principal religious text. In particular, it recounts the amorous adventures of Krishna with the gopis in the enchanged forest of Vrindavana. Besides its theological importance, the Bhagavata has inspired countless artistic representations especially in miniature paintings in the Rajput Courts of Rajasthan and the Pahari region. Celebrating Krishna, produced in the traditional pothi format, brings together for the first time a selection of paintings from the last five hundred years from museums and private collections around the world along with calligraphy and English translation of select verses.
