Darjeeling, the dreamy land of northern West Bengal merged with the state of west Bengal in 1947 comprising the hill towns of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and some areas of Terrain region. The present book is about the demography and economy of the hilly region. It has a description of history and geography and the growth trend of population and the major contributors of the hill economy the tea, tourism, agriculture are being nicely depicted in this book. The livelihood pattern and occupational shifts, migration, medical services (now and then) are also exhibited. The major threat on the hilly region due to environmental degradation has been elaborately discussed along with some suggestive measures for the sustainability of the region.
