"Lifestyle Disease or Lifetimes Diseases are the creatures of our own way of living. These diseases are not infectious but self-imposed. The right quality of health education is the only answer to avoid them. These diseases are on the increase because of stresses and strains caused by urbanization, pollution, violating laws of nature and glamour of temporary pleasures.
The World Health Report, 2002 on reducing risks promoting healthy life highlighted the fundamental role or risk factors as a cause of ill-health. Five of the top ten risk factors identified are: tobacco, alcohol, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity--all major risk factors for NCDs. These risk factors are now becoming increasingly prevalent in the developing countries leading to a double burden of disease.
The following are health education measures to control lifestyle or lifetime diseases which are a gift of modern lifestyles:
Exercise-Exercise is important as most of our time is spent in non-active life. Exercise of one form or the other is essential to speed up the metabolic system.
Nutrition--we should avoid fatty diet which is difficult to digest and can create many chain effects.
We should avoid stressful life, which is the cause of too many diseases.
We should keep the environment-physical and mental healthy.
We should avoid the use of drugs/substances, i.e. alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc.
We should avoid non-peaceful life causing disease resulting from violence.
We should cut speed to avoid accidents.
All the above suggestions are easy to read but difficult to practice. It requires a constant effort to change mental make-up to keep healthy, vital and energetic." (jacket)
