These days information has been increasing exponentially in large quantities and in complexity of various subjects with inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary nature which has been called Information explosion. The multiplicity of journals and their specializations, the increasing needs of user communities, substantial increases in subscription costs of journals, decreasing credit of Indian rupee abroad, and the constraints of limited financial resources have posed a serious threat before the librarian/documentalist/library administrator to acquire all the published materials in the field. Therefore, to streamline the acquisition policy of the library and to satisfy the majority of clientele to maximum extent, an attempt is made to find a list of core journals in the field which is possible with the help of bibliometric studies. bibliometric techniques are also applied to identify the research trends and growth of knowledge in different disciplines, to identify authorship trends, to study obsolescence and dispersion of scientific literature, to predict productivity of publishers, to study the pattern of scatter of literature on a subject in different periodicals, to develop and measure information and knowledge transfer.
