Forest plays an important role in enhancing the quality of the environment and life processes. It contributes substantially to the economic development of the state and is a renewable source. In ancient times people worshiped trees and revered the multitude of benefits it offered. Today deforestation is rampant everywhere and the land seems to be more bare than covered in order to meet the various needs and requirements of the individual and the society at large. In the quest for progress and civilization, along came exploitation and depletion of natural forest, poverty, under-development, increasing population and various developmental activities are posing a threat to humanity and the environment, and urgent remedial measures are required for its restoration and maintenance of ecological balance. A mapped picture and information of the forest types and forest cover of all the districts in the state on the whole would impart significant awareness and knowledge. (jacket)
