"The Hunsgi and Baichbal Basins (Gulbarga District, Karnataka), occupy a unique place in the Lower Palaeolithic map of the world having yielded rich evidence of hominid occupation in the form of over 200 Acheulian sites. A study of the landscape, sites, stone tools and experimental work was undertaken with the objective of understanding the formation processes of the surface, near-surface and buried Acheulian sites in the semiarid environment of the basins. This enabled the classification of the Acheulian record according to their varying scales of spatial and temporal resolution and assessment of their usefulness for understanding various aspects of hominid behaviour."
