"This book was conceived and written with the view of providing the students and researcher with a concise text. It is still the shortest available text book of Indian Fresh-water Teleostean Fish Musculature in general and giving full coverage of the Cephalic muscles of some Indian Fresh-water Fishes in particular. In this book much more stress has been laid to the functional aspects of the muscles of some fresh water Teleosts in accordance to their use and function. Unfortunately the comparative study of the musculatures was given little attention in comparison to that of other organ system. The book is divided into three parts. The first part of the book bearing chapter 1 to 4 deals with the functional anatomy of various muscles like eye muscles and myodome, osteology of branchial basket, branchial and hypobranchial muscles more particularly functional morphology of the Cephalic muscles of some fresh water carps, siluroid and non-siluroid fishes. Second part of the book chapter 5 and 6 imparts light on the myomeric musculature and histophysiological and cytochemical analysis viz., SDH activity, localization of lipid and acid mucopolysaccaride of the test muscles. Last part of the book chapter 7 throws light on the phylogenetic interrelationship and their evolutionary significance in relation to their form and function." (jacket)
