The study of Surnames is an interesting and unexplored subject as yet in Assam as well as in Northeast India. Surname, also called family name, or last name is added to 'given' name, and in the many cases inherited and held in common by members of a family. Surname formation often reflects the history and basis of culture hence it is an interesting subject from the point of view of social and cultural life of a group of people. The book deals with the origin, etymology and linguistic interpretation, location, extent and history of the various surnames of Assam.
