Higher Education and Development
The book contains original and analytical topics which highlight the importance of meaningful higher education in self-development and consequently for the transformation of society as a whole. It also takes an in-depth view of the higher education process, taking into account the ever-evolving political, social, economic and cultural contexts. The effort is to delineate what entails higher education and more importantly, what higher education signifies in a global context. It will serve as a reference tool, which delineates the relationship between higher education and development. The complexity and multidisciplinary nature of the problems that have led to unsustainable development are broadly acknowledged. These interconnected and systemic problems require a new approach based on different ways of thinking and acting. Understood as a lifelong learning process, education has the power to affect current and future decision makers. A high proportion of the population now enter higher education at some time in their lives. Higher education is therefore very important to national economies, both as a significant industry in its own right, and as a source of trained and educated personnel for the rest of the economy.
