"The first planned city of northern India after Mohenjo-Daro and the Greek City of Sirkat, Jaipur was built by the versatile ruler of Amber, Sawai Jai Singh. Soon after its founding, Jaipur became and has since remained the most important city of Rajasthan. In providing a good water system, street lighting, medical facilities, higher education, etc., it has kept pace with modern cities of India. Over time the city became a centre of banking and jewellery trade and later a centre of Sanskrit learning and a religious centre. One of the products of the city was Todarmal. The capital story of the birth and growth of Jaipur could thus be said to be the history of civilization in northern India during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries."
