The present book deals with an interesting and a fascinating group of primitive plants that have been placed by the taxonomists under the sub-division “Algae”. With the advancement of our knowledge in the subject, a large number of texts have appeared which are useful in their own way but no not fully meet the needs of the Indian students. The present treatise has been presented in a simple and lucid style so that a mediocre student of Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Agriculture may very well understand the life phenomenon of these plants and their Thallus organization. A simple, clear, well-illustrated and a concise account on the structure, reproduction, functions and their relationship with important members of the class rhodophyceae has been provided. Introductory chapter in the beginning of the text is meant to acquaint the student with a general outline of the various aspects in the ultrastructure of cell organelles in Hypnea. It also deals with the development of carposporogenesis and tetrasporogenesis.

The subject-matter of the book includes the introduction to ultrastructure of the cell organelles, like outer amorphous cell wall layer and inner cellulosic layer, plastids, floridean starch. Mitochondria, golgibodies etc. It also deals with the study of reproductive phase viz., development of carposporogenesis and tetrasporogenesis. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical elements distribution in the cell wall, platids and floridean starch grain of the vegetative thallus and estimation of chemical element in reproductive parts of cystocarp and tetrasporic ramuli.
