Improved Cook Stoves
Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Review of literature. 3. Methodology. 4. Results and discussion. 5. Summary and conclusion. Bibliography. Appendices.
Energy crisis is a major social and environmental issue. Scientists all over the world come out with several technological options for mitigating the gravity of the problem. One such technological option that made its formal entry into the Indian homes is the improved chulha, the fire wood stove. The programme for popularization of improved chulha though initiated in India in 1952, became a national programme in 1985. The chulhas popularized under the scheme claim efficiency ranging from 20 to 35 per cent as against 5 to 10 per cent reported for conventional chulhas and several health and environmental benefits to the users and their micro environment with overall benefits at macro level.
An attempt has also been made in the book to examine the technical defects in the assembly of the chulha installed in the houses through standard laboratory and field testing techniques and judging the viability of these techniques for evaluation of the technology and the programme at field level. On the whole the content in the book is intended to project the modalities for making the technology more viable and feasible. The two scales developed by the author - the technology rating and the attitude scale can be conveniently used by the staff to get the biomass stoves evaluated by the user of the technology. (jacket)
