From the Foreword: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has no geographical, racial or economic boundaries. It is the major cause of dementia in middle to old-age individuals throughout the world. With the increase in human life span, the prevalence of this age associated disease continues to grown. About hundred years ago, this disease was discovered by Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Many synthetic drugs have been developed to treat mild to severe AD but these do not seem to be effective because of their symptomatic relief and side effects. As plant based natural products are endorsed with properties like nontoxicity, effectiveness, specificity, stability and potency, plants may be regarded as a source of ideal drugs. Scientists are, therefore, switching their areas of research from synthetic to natural realms for discovery of novel drugs.
