"Information is now flowing fast to the people through various media: print and electronic. The media are known to be playing an effective role not only in informing the people but also in influencing their thinking and shaping their attitudes. Journalists who write news stories, features, articles and editorials for daily newspapers and magazines have to act with a great sense of responsibility because their writings have a tremendous impact on the society.

The responsibilities of journalists--social, legal and professional--have been discussed and the need for a code of ethics for journalists have been emphasised. Some of the codes evolved at different times have been presented and the rules of Press Council and ombudsman have been briefly described. In the book the objectives and functions of the various professional organizations and statutory bodies concerned with the press and other media have been described.

Maintenance of high professional standards is certainly a major responsibility of the publisher and the editor. On the one hand journalists ought to be vigilant to safeguard the freedom of the press and on the other they must see that this freedom is used and never misuse, that they always act with a great sense of responsibility.

Generally, the primary duty of a journalist is to act as an interpreter of the world around him. He observes the events, transmits facts about the events and acts as an interpreter of these events. A journalist is an important unit of the democratic system in our country." (jacket)
