This is the ninth work in the Library in India Series covering the North-West region of India. There are four states comprehended in this study, namely, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab. This study is presented in two volumes. Volume 1 covers the first 3 states listed above. Volume 2 covers Punjab.

Under each section a brief history of the state, and principal language (s) spoken are given as prelude. The part on public libraries gives a brief history f libraries in the state, library development, library legislation and library system in the state. The part on academic libraries covers university libraries, college libraries, school libraries, etc. These are parts tat are devoted to special libraries, library education, library associations; library personnel, library literature, etc.

All sections carry a chronology important events in the history and development libraries; reference material, professional journals, etc. Thus each section is all pervasive and fairly exhaustive in coverage.
