"The quality of online subject  retrieval via a classification scheme depends on the computer hardware and software capabilities, and on the structure and notation of the classification scheme. Among the latter\'s essential qualities for this purpose are a logical structure; a definite, standard and communicable way of handling material that relates to more than one field (such as city planning or the influence of religion on art),  and a notation that is expressive and therefore permits truncation and hierarchical searching relatively easily. A sure and successful method of guaranteeing efficient service to the readers is to provide a simple, workable catalogue of books and other reading material in a library. A library  without a good catalogue of its books is unlikely to reveal to readers the entire range of its resources, however close the classification might be and despite open access to the shelves."
