Literacy and Development

Literacy cannot be separated from the development process, they are intrinsically related and there is dynamic interplay between the two at the various levels of society. This Book is an attempt to present a clear and comprehensive picture of the situation of literacy in the world, in the country and North Eastern Region of India in particular. Author has made an attempt to give a concept of literacy and role played by literacy in the development process. Situation of literacy in the world, in India and North Eastern Region of India in particular has been presented in the book on the basis of latest available data. Author has also presented a discussion on the historical development of literacy in India and research on literacy in India- past, present and future. The last chapter of the book deals with various problems of literacy campaign in the region and offered some measures for proper implementation of literacy campaign. The book is mainly based on secondary data collected from various sources like Census of India2001, National Sample Survey (NSS) and National Family Health survey (NFHS-III) 2006-07.
