"Lucknow is believed to be extant from Lord Rama\'s time. It was a prosperous town and the capital of Awadh during the Mughal rule. It became the cynosure of all eyes during Nawabi Rule and was compared by foreign visitors to the great cities of the world like Babylon, Rome, Athens, Paris, Moscow, Constantinople, Dresden, Oxford and Eaton. It was acclaimed as the \'City of Palaces and Gardens\'.

This book deals with nearly 500 monuments and historical sites of Lucknow belonging to the period between 11 and 19 century that have now been lost. The monuments and historical sites are chronologically presented. They are secular and religious and a good number of them are related to the mutiny of 1857-1858 (India\'s First War of independence) in which Lucknow played a very significant and major role."
