Social workers are the most appropriate managers for social services agencies because of their interpersonal skills, their understanding of the ecological systems approach, their focus on the needs of the clients, and their understanding of social work practice, then we must conclude that good social work managers must first be social workers. Without a solid micro and macro social work education and without direct service practice experience, social work managers are really no different from other management disciplines, only without a strong a background in the technical skill sets required for successful management.
