Library\'s collecting policies and mechanisms with regard to born-digital materials are closely tied to its preservation capabilities. As long as traditional collecting mechanisms guarantee a steady stream of print, other analog materials, and tangible digital objects such as CD-ROMs into the library\'s collections, there is an illusion that little significant content is being lost. The absence of significant digital content in the library\'s collections removes a sense of urgency about digital preservation, and the lack of organisational capacity to preserve many types of born-digital information discourages the library from taking on responsibilities that is not prepared to fulfill. The focus of librarians working for the management of preservation activities that seeks to maintain access to content within books, manuscripts, archival materials, and other library resources. Examples of activities managed by preservation librarians include binding, conservation, digital and analog reformatting, digital preservation, and environmental monitoring. (jacket)
