"Initiated by the economic reforms launched in 1991, today India is in a transition to a more developed and open economy. The reforms have ended the 'License Raj'. The entry of private enterprises into the reserved sectors for the government enterprises has created competitive pressures on existing state-owned units to perform better. The services sector has also helped the Indian economy in the capacity to adjust to liberalization and globalisation trends. In line with the global trends, the services sector in India is growing rapidly and the share of services in India's GDP has increased to around 60 per cent. The services sector play in the Indian economy unusually large role in comparison to other countries at similar stages of development. Services have strengthened India's economic performance through their linkages with other sectors of the economy. Most of the rapid growth has been in the information technology and business process outsourcing services. The telecommunications, financial sector, retailing and infrastructure industry have also shown an encouraging high growth trend.
The focus of the present book is specifically on the services sector because of the central importance of services to India's current economic expansion as discussed above. The present book outlines the success story of India's services sector and also highlights major bottlenecks attached to it. The book provides a synthesis report by bringing together 35 papers that were presented in the AICTE sponsored National Seminar at RIMT-IMCT. The papers address the major areas of the services sector, notably trends and patterns in services, the role of banks and financial markets, the benefits of FDI in services, innovations in services, the role of ICT in services and the global trends of some services, and many more as well as some case studies from the successful service companies."
