The present volume is primarily a critical edition of Avayava-Mathuri and Avayava-Jagadisi, two unpublished commentarial works of Navya-Nyaya. These commentaries are based on the Avayava-section of Gangesa’s Magnum Opus Tattvacintamani Book II. As a prelude to these works the Avayava-Mula along with a verbatim translation of it into English has been placed in the beginning. The object of this book is five-membered syllogism of age-old Nyaya-tradition promulgated by Goutama. Topics dealt with in this volume include Nyaya (categorical logic), Avayava (constituent member), Pratijna (declaration), Hetu (reasoning), Udaharana (illustration), Upanaya (assimilation) and Nigamana (conclusion). Gangesa as a neo-logician adopts fresh definition of each of these topics in a highly technical language with an aim of producing exactness of intended things. The commentators are devoted to explaining the justification and purport of each of those words and sentences contained in the definitions. To express the nature of a concept with the formulation of a faultless definition of it is the usual characteristic of Navya-Nyaya. (jacket)
