"This book has been prepared by UNESCO with the aim of creating an international teaching aid for institutions of higher education. The book presents the interrelation and interdependence between human rights, and peace, democracy, development and the environment. It analyses obstacles and threats to human rights at the dawn of the twenty-first century and suggests ways and means to overcome them. The possible positive and negative impact on human rights of globalization, the information revolution and scientific and technological progress is also discussed by well-known human rights specialists from different regions. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the creation of a universal culture of human rights through education and public information is an essential element in making human rights a reality for all."  (jacket)
