"The school playground deserves thorough consideration in the total pattern of community recreation facilities. Years ago the pedagogue regarded school playgrounds as a place where children spent their time during recess periods, and immediately before and after school. In those days the playground represented a service facility "similar to the cloakroom or lavatory". Few teachers utilized the area for organized educational and recreational activities. Unfortunately this attitude prevails even today in many school systems throughout the country." (jacket)
