From the Foreword: Geological Survey of India, has a long and continuing involvement in Palaeontological researches in India. Renowned palaeontologists like Fiestmantel, Reed, Stoliczka, Steward Sahni and many such doyens have enriched the literature and collection on Stratigraphy and Palaeontology of our country.

Estheriids of Indian Gondwana will be of interest to the field geologists working in coal basins of Indian because these fossils are excellent guide to palaeoenvironmental set up. The fauna contain index fossils for determining the age of the sediments. The red beds can now be precisely correlated all over the world with the help of leaiid bioprogramme. Its study holds key to the understanding of Permo-Triassic Boundary, an enigma in Gondwana Geology. Shri Ghosh has attempted to analyze all the aforementioned subjects with available data derived from study of Estheriids. This Palaeontologia Indica will benefit geologists, especially palaeontologists, working in Gondwana terrain. The present study is first of its kind in India.
