From the preface: "The present undertaking is an attempt to study the pattern of agricultural production with all its corollaries for South Eastern Rajputana during the eighteenth century. The studies so far made of the agrarian sytem have been confined to Eastern Rajputana and this part of Rajputana has remained completely untouched in the academic world. Regional variations often provide ostensible vistas to understand the overall structure in its entirety. As such what was applicable for Eastern Rajputana does not necessarily entail an equal bearing on South Eastern Rajputana, though the pattern of study and the fundamental concepts remain undiluted.
"The problem with eighteenth century becomes more meaningful for it witnessed gruesome armed conflicts right from the thirties leading to imporvishment of the state structure. During this pell-mell link of this region with Malwa, Gujarat and the Gangetic valley were blurred leading to a comparatively dull and unstable trade."
