"It is extremely difficult to define Karate. It is linked in the public mind with Judo but no doubt this is because both developed in Japan and both are practised in similar garments. In fact the Karate jacket, not having to take much strain from pulling and tugging, is much lighter in weight but this is not obvious on a casual inspection. In both, participants work in bare feet. Not so long ago Judo men, on attaining the distinction of black belt, were introduced to atemi which is the art of disabling opponents by striking at nerve centres and other vital part of the body. Karate is a further development of this form of fighting.
