From the Foreword: "The present inquiry primarily is limited to the developments in the first half of the twentieth century and its deliberately chosen stress is on the role and limitations of political ideologies and systems which seriously contributed to the collapse of the civilization introduced by the European renaissance. The two major ideologies or systems that are examined are Liberalism/Parliamentary democracy on one side and Marxism/Bolshevism on the other. After the war they did show some signs of outgrowing  their limitations and these are notes. But they proved to be false signs, highlighting the need for a more suitable formulation of principles and practices which might inspire a new renaissance."
