“Sericulture is an ancient industry in India, dating back atleast to the 2nd Century BC. According to some historians silk was exported from India to Rome during the reign of Kanikshka in 58 BC. In its history sericulture has passed through periods of great prosperity as well as decline. Efforts were made in the 18th, 19th and early 20th Century to patronise silk, mainly by British traders and it flourished in the sates of then Bengal, Mysore and Kashmir.
The sericulture industry has been transformed from a traditional to a modern and economically viable enterprise. Adequate infrastructure along with research initiative, training and extension system, supported by government policies, private and NGO’s participation with good forward and backward linkages have supported the sericulture industry for sustained growth.
The Edited Book is an attempt to publish for wide readership the effort of the Faculty who were involved in Research on Economics, Marketing and Management issues on the sericulture sector and also gave direction to trainees from across Asia and Africa at the International Center for Training and Research in Tropical Sericulture, Central Sericulture Research and Institute of Mysore.”
