Rural Banking is an important dimension of rural economy which essentially caters to growing credit needs of rural areas. Development of rural economy holds the key to natural development. Needless to emphasize that credit is a vital input for the development of the rural economy for financing agriculture and allied activities, rural infrastructure and poverty-alleviation programme meant for the weaker sections of the rural population. Rural Banking system is the institutional mechanism which brings credit to those who need it. In India, it is comprised of co-operatives, the rural branches of commercial banks and regional rural banks. The uniqueness of RRBs lies in the harmonious blending of low cost profile and local feel of co-operative credit system and modernised on look and professional management of Commercial Banks. They were created exclusively for catering to the credit requirements of the rural poor. The book has been divided into six chapters. The arrangement of chapters does not follow any basic principle of formula correlating them. They have simply been arranged on the pattern for the sake of convenience, easy handling and understanding the subject. During the writing process, some discrepancies are bound to occur. I take the whole responsibility of these discrepancies and apologies for inconvenience, apart from this, I am confident that the book will make some contribution to the effectiveness of RRB’s schemes.
