This book is an outcome of the cross-sectional and empirical study carried out among about 1200 elderly persons belonging to four Community Development Blocks of a highly industrialized district (Coimbatore) in Tamil Nadu. The major focus of this research work is on diverse issues related to rural elderly socio-economic differentials among men and women, living arrangements, socio-familial interactions as well as intergenerational contacts of the elderly, in addition to their health status, disabilities and utilization of heath care services. The analysis is not just restricted to frequency and cross-tabulations with suitable tests of significance, but also made use of advanced multivariate statistical techniques like binary logistic regression as well as multinomial logistic regression techniques. The findings would be immensely useful for formulating strategies for the well-being of the elderly at personal level as well as at family/community level. This book would serve as a useful piece of research work for academicians and researchers engaged in teaching and research on elderly persons. It also can serve as a reference book for policy makers and programme administrators, as well as educationists and scholars / teachers of varied disciplines like sociology, population studies, social work, women\'s studies, social and cultural anthropology, economics, home science, etc. (jacket)
