Since the beginning of the sixth plan period, massive efforts have been undertaken by the government to bring the rural women into the orbit of the development network. In this context, the present book focuses on where these rural women stand in the development process today. The book is based on a macro study micro study. It makes a situational analysis of the women in India in past and present, the rural setting of the country and the plight of women therein. It makes a policy analysis by discussing the planned proposals launched by the government for the rural development and the women specific rural development programmes. It consists of a micro analysis to be more specific a role analysis of the rural women in the development programmes. This role analysis embraces an assessment of their awareness, and their perception of the rural development programmes, their participation in the planning and implementation of the programmes and finally the benefits they have received from the programmes. Participation of women in Panchayati Raj and the significance of the bill is analysed thoroughly.
