"Reeling of silk is a delicate art, and as such must be handled carefully. The silk filaments being extremely fine, we unfortunately cannot reel the strands straight from silkworms, as from spiders. Hence, the reeling of a single fiber of silk uses upto five or ten cocoons, and involves a complicated process by machine in a factory called a filature. The reeled yarn is termed raw silk.

The silk reeling industry covers a wide range of activities included in sericulture-handling of fresh cocoon, cocoon drying and storage, cocoon boiling and reeling, raw silk re-reeling and finishing, management of water quality and quantity, utilisation of by products, maintenance etc. This book guides the reader through each step of the reeling process, right from the placing of cocoons in hot water to the sorting of skeins of raw silk yarn."
