"The present publication 'Small Scale Industries in India' mainly focuses on the growth and development of small and tiny industrial sector which helps in generating and promoting employment and national income.

As such Small-Scale Industries (SSIs) have been playing a vital role in the country's industrial development. These have contributed significantly to the socio-economic development, comprising labour absorption, income distribution, rural development, poverty eradication, regional balances and promotion of entrepreneurship. The small labour intensive industries in the country have been favoured basically to create employment opportunities, as it has always been endowed with abundance of labour even though such industries may not always be supported on the grounds of their economic efficiency.

Small-Scale industries, at present, are manufacturing over 6000 products involving very simple to highly sophisticated technologies and offering opportunities for the utilisation of local resources and skills.

The small and tiny industrial sector is the second pillar of Indian economy and after independence the Government of India has liberally promoted the SSI units credited with generating the highest rates of employment grown and major share of industrial promotion."
