"Social development, of late, has been accepted as a strong and vital component of economic development. The five decades of development experience in the country had clearly brought home its relevance. The experience of other developed nations also substantiates that without developing the social sector, a country cannot attain the status of a developed nation, because it is only through the process of social development, the element of sustainability could be provided to the process of growth. The anomalies and disparities that have cropped up during all these years of planning have largely been on account of the mismatch between the level of economic and social development. The level of social development, in general, has been at quite low levels across board. The present volume seeks to critically examine and evaluate the performance of some of the aspects of development that come under the purview of social sector and suggests appropriate policy interventions."
