"After independence, particularly in the last two three decades Government of India has emphasized the development of sports and physical education. Besides the establishment of special organisations and institutions at the national and regional levels for the purpose, it has promoted this education in the schools, colleges and universities through provision of necessary infrastructure or physical facilities, sports and athletic aids and equipment, training and orientation etc. The government at the national as well as state levels encourages sportsmen and athletes by providing qualified coaches, higher training, organising regional and national meets and competition. Above all, the Central Government has encouraged the coaches, sportsmen and athletes to excel in their fields by offering various awards and incentives to the outstanding athletes and sportsmen/women in their respective fields.

This book deals with this subject very comprehensively and with up to date facts and figures. It has dwelt upon the national policies and programmes, institutions and agencies, different types of sports and games with theoretical and practical perspectives." (jacket)
