From the Preface: "The main objective of this study is to present a systematic, comprehensive and balanced account of the position of Hindus under the Mughal Empire. Most of the learned scholars who have dealt with this subject have eulogised the Mughal Emperors for pursuing what they consider a liberal policy and what they think led to the prosperity and well-being of the Hindus. This study has sought to show that their views are not based on unimpeachable evidence. Great emphasis has been given in re-writing the history of both the ruling and the ruled classes from a new angle without suppressing the facts. Besides the contemporary vernacular literatures and the travel accounts of the foreign travellers who visited this country during the period, the contemporary Persian chronicles have also been profitably utilised in preparing this monograph."
